Royal Enfield to launch Continental GT in UK next month

Royal Enfield, a part of the Eicher Motors Group, will launch its new model Continental GT in the UK next month as it looks to tap global customers in the mid-sized motorcycle segment.

The company will also increase its total motorcycle production by over 40 percent next year to 2.5 lakh units from an expected 1.76 lakh units this year.

"The Continental GT will be launched in the UK in September. This is a product for the global audience and is one of the big steps we are taking to be a global player in the mid-sized segment," Eicher Motors Managing Director & CEO Siddhartha Lal said in a conference call.

He said Royal Enfield has been working to expand its distribution footprint both in the domestic and international markets towards achieving leadership in the global mid-sized motorcycle segment.

When asked if the Continental GT, a niche caf-racer motorcycle, would be launched in India, he said it would happen later in the year.

On increasing of production, Lal said: "We have said that this year we will have a total of 1.75 lakh units from two plants. Next year it will go up to 2.5 lakh units."

With the commissioning of the new plant at Oragadam, near Chennai earlier this year, the company has been gradually ramping up production in order to reduce waiting period for its motorcycles.

"In the beginning of this year we were producing about 12,000 units a month. In July we produced about 16,000 units and we are gradually moving along as per planned," he said.

Lal, however, said the company doesn't see a drastic cut in the waiting period for its products, which at present is around seven months on an average, as bookings are still coming.

"We expect the waiting period will now be around six months," he said.

Royal Enfield's models include the Bullet, Classic and Thunderbird in both 350 and 500 cc displacements. Its bikes are exported to over 40 countries across the world, including the USA, Japan, UK and other European nations and Latin American countries, as well as the Middle East and South Asia.

In India, it operates through 11 company-operated stores and 250 dealers in all major cities and towns.

Announcement of Modi as BJP's PM candidate may be delayed

The BJP may further delay the announcement of Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi as the party's prime ministerial candidate till the Assembly elections to Delhi, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh and Rajasthan are over.

Top party sources said though discussions are on in BJP on the issue, there is a view that announcing Modi as the PM candidate before the assembly polls may not be a good idea.

The reluctance to anoint Modi as the PM candidate stems mainly from the party's anxiety to insulate him from criticism in the event of the results of the assembly elections going against the party.

"In case we lose say two of the four states, it will reflect badly on Modi as our political adversaries will blame it on him," a senior BJP leader said.

Though BJP is confident of victory in Congress-ruled Rajasthan and to a great extent in Madhya Pradesh, the chances are slim in Chhattisgarh and quite bleak in Delhi, according to party sources.

Much will also depend on whether Congress will go for early Lok Sabha polls. BJP does not want to announce Modi's candidature very close to the general elections either and would like the message to go out loud and clear to the people.

"However, it is highly unlikely that Congress will go for early polls as there is a strong anti-incumbency against it at the moment," a BJP leader said.

The main opposition feels Congress would like to reap the benefits of the Food Security Act and Direct Benefit Transfer as well as other schemes before it faces the electorate.

However, there is a strong opinion in BJP that the party should declare the PM candidate ahead of the polls.

"Since 1996, in every Lok Sabha election, we have announced the PM candidate," the sources said.

Meanwhile, BJP distanced itself from two posters that came up in the city depicting only Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi with the slogan "new thinking, new hope" and said these hoardings have not been authorised by the party.

Senior BJP leaders said the campaign material and posters have not yet been prepared and there is no plan as of now to project only the Gujarat Chief Minister on them.

"These hoardings may have come up due to some enthusiastic supporters of Modi. BJP has not decided to put up Modi posters to test any public response," a senior BJP leader said.

Sonia asks Telangana leaders to exercise restraint

New Delhi: Congress President Sonia Gandhi on Wednesday asked Telangana leaders to maintain "restraint, brotherhood and cordial relations" with people of Andhra and Rayalseema regions as the process started for creation of a separate state.

A delegation comprising Union Ministers S Jaipal Reddy, Balram Naik, MPs Ponnam Prabhakar, S Rajaiah, P Govardhana Reddy and a large contingent of state ministers from the region called on Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, Gandhi, and NCP chief Sharad Pawar to thank them for the Telangana decision.

Rahul Gandhi was also at 10 Janpath, when the Telangana leaders visited there. During the 20 minute-long meeting with Gandhi, the Telangana leaders also had a photo opportunity with the Congress President.

"You have to maintain restraint because some people may be aggrieved over the decision. Maintain brotherhood with people of other regions with whom you have lived for so long. Maintain a cordial relationship and give support to people from the other regions, who have settled in the Telangana region," Gandhi is learnt to have told the delegation.

Party MP Rajaiah said that Gandhi was keen that people from non-Telangana regions living in Hyderabad and other districts of the Telangana region are given support and have a sense of belonging.

"We thanked her for the decision on Telangana saying it would be a red-letter day and assured her that we will co-operate with our brothers from other two regions. The fact is that they have settled not only in Hyderabad but in all other nine districts of Telangana and are holding key posts there.

"They never faced a problem and will not do so in future. They are living with us for more than 150 years and there was never a problem in maintaining harmony," he said.

Another MP Ponnam Prabhakar said that Telangana leaders have also decided to form a Sadhbhavana Group and meet the legislators and MPs from other two regions seeking their cooperation in formation of the new state for which Congress Working Committee passed a resolution yesterday.

Ghanchakkar Movie Review

Cast: Emraan Hashmi, Vidya Balan, Rajesh Mishra, Namit Das

Directed by: Rajkumar Gupta

Ratings: * * *

Mumbai: Ghanchakkar is directed by Rajkumar Gupta who made films such as Aamir and No One Killed Jessica earlier. These two films made critics stood up and take notice at the Film maker. This time the director makes a crazy comedy about a Heist that successfully goes wrong after the person who has money looses his memory.

Sanjay Athray (Emraan Hashmi) wants to take a retirement from his criminal life but plans a one last perfect bank robbery with his partner in crime friends (Rajesh Mishra and Namit Das). The Heist goes absolutely perfect but when Sanjay looses his memory, All hell break loose. Why? Because it is Sanjay who knows where he has kept the money, But he now doesn't remember.

Sanjay's friends decides to stay with him till the time he get's recovered. But there is another hitch. They will also have to face Sanjay's quirky and insane wife Neetu (Vidya Balan).

Emraan Hashmi as Sanjay is simply outstanding. He is one such actor who can even perform on any empty frame with no dialogues at all. But it is Vidya Balan actually who steals the show with her perfect comic timing and typical Delhi-Punjabi accent. Rajesh Mishra and Namit Das who plays Emraan's partner-in-crime friends are fabulous. Please note them both in the scene when the doctor declares Sanjay has lost his memory and it may take longer to recover.

Like i stated earlier, Rajkumar Gupta has chosen a different script this time. The film might looked hilarious and fast on paper, But sadly on the screen the film drags at many points. It also looked that the writers ran out of comical punch-lines at few places. What could have been a rib-ticking scene, Turns out to be a just another normal scene. There are some good twist and turn in the film. The camera work and production value are very good. Music wise, The title track is good. Rest of the music will not be remembered much according to me. The editing of the film is on the lower note.

Since there are no other films this week, Ghanchakkar can be touted as a good and funny Time Pass. The film is good, But not the amazing one.

Photo of female student causes website to crash

Beijing, June 28: An attractive Chinese female student's graduation pictures have proved so popular that they caused her university website to crash after being uploaded onto the homepage.
The website of one of China's top universities crashed after it had an unprecedented number of visitors who apparently logged in to check out the uploaded photos of the young female graduate.
In the pictures, the girl named Kang Kang is seen flaunting her graduation robes and holding a mortarboard hat, in a variety of poses on and around the university campus.
The incident occurred at the Renmin University of China and many people suspect the pictures are one of the ways the university uses to attract new students, 'South China Morning Post' reported.
The decision to put up the pictures - which is unusual for conservative Chinese universities - not only drew countless clicks on its website, but also excited people's curiosity as to who the student was.
According to The Beijing News, the girl is the university's arts school graduate majoring in the double bass.
Her photo was shot by a professional photographer Mao Yanzheng.
"It's unbelievable that it takes only one photo to make a person famous," Mao said.
Mao shot over 300 photos and chose two he thought were the best for the university's website. He said he only did it as a favor.
The varsity's decision to use the photo sparked different views on-line. Some netizens praised the picture for capturing the beauty of youth during graduation time.
"This student embodies the elegant, fresh look of our graduates," a Renmin University graduate commented on-line. Some admirers even dubbed the attractive graduate a "RenminU goddess" - a term very popular among young people in China to refer to pretty women whom they find unattainable.
However, others did not approve of the photo on the website, saying it was a deviation from the university's fundamental principles.

No woman in women's talks! Twitter pic amazes the world

Bangalore, June 28: It could seem to be the world's biggest act of hypocrisy. A room full of men supposedly gathering to speak about women in society with not a single woman present on the occasion. Location: Saudi Arabia.
The picture of such an event has gone viral on Twitter, with men and women across the globe laughing at its absurdity and extent of hypocrisy.
There is no authenticity that the photo is indeed of an event on women fully dominated by men but is this really surprising in a country where women are yet to cover miles before they are acknowledged as assets of the nation? It is a country where rights to drive, vote or get elected are far off and even if a woman is stoned to death for trying to leave their husband, it is considered a fair deal.
Maybe, the dominant males of the Saudi Arabian society gathered to decide what to do with the country's women, particularly those coming up fast, post the Arab Spring. It might not be 'how to help the women' but 'what to do with their rise'.
Or may be that these males are having a talk on business or politics, but even then the complete absence of women is not a happy sight.
